Decide how you want to carry your camera - a case / bag or stick in your pocket. Do you have an interest in learning photography or just want to aim and shoot. Sounds like you just want a point and shoot...

Wal-Mart Doesn't repair any cameras. I would call casio and see if they have a defect warranty and if it is still under warranty.

It depends upon your requirements
The Nikon D40 has a sensor that is over 15 times larger than P&S cameras
The Nikon D40 can use any of the over 26 AF-S and AF-I lenses .. that covers from ultra wide angle to super long lenses ... with the Fujifilm camera you are stuck with the lens you get .. peroid
The Nikon D40 can shoot in Program, Aperture, Shutter speed modes or totally manually ... for "experimental" purposes the D40 is the only one that allows you to take control of all the aspects of shooting.http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nikon-D40-Digita…

I'm not sure about the lenses, but if you didn't want to purchase a Canon, another good brand is Nikon. I have a Nikon SLR and I'll be purchasing a Nikon D40 dSLR this summer. Canon is leading though in making digital lenses that are exactly like film lenses (so the view is the same)... but both are good brands
And good for you to learn on film first. I think that that is the way to go. It teaches you all the basics and then you can go to digital with a better sense of photography. Have fun!

I can only speak for myself as a pro.
I purchased a digital camera body that would compliment the ten or so lenses I already had. I can't imagine switching camers systems and not be able to use my existing lenses. Frankly I could not afford it.
The Pentax is NOT one of the cameras the pros use.
We were all beginners once. Look at Nikon and Canon for the sturdiest camera bodies (you have seen them on the sidelines at football games getting whacked and they still work fine)

Learn all the skills with photochemical first, then move to photo electronic. Photochemical teaches skills and selectivity, photo electronic depends on software and quality printers. Because you can go on taking as many pics as you want with digital, people do not develop the skills and really really on luck to get a good image. My advice is stay with photochemical and learn all you can, look at the work of various master photographers and learn from their work. Bill Brandt, Fay Godwin, Stieglitz, Man Ray etc. Also work in B&W to develop your composition skills.
with colour its easy, learn the hard way. Yes you need to purchase film, but that makes you selective in what you photograph. Good luck and enjoy!
